  • 2012: The year in review

The year of 2012 saw numerous athletic achievements from Conifer’s football team’s run to the 3A state semifinals to Platte Canyon’s baseball team capturing a share of the league title for the first time in 37 years to former Lobo Ben Grado winning an NCAA national diving title. With that said, the High Timber Times looks back at 10 stories that made headlines in the past 12 months.

CONIFER FOOTBALL GOES FURTHER THAN EVER BEFORE

  • Gambel’s oak is a rare sighting...

When I go down Little Cub Creek Road, I always look for a small cluster of Gambel’s oak, which grows on a scruffy southwest-facing slope just south of Mountain Park Road. It is a clump of small trees. Although they have single trunks and are tree shaped, they are little more than shrubs.

Macaulay’s 24 points pace Conifer past host Berthoud
BERTHOUD — Adam Macaulay scored a game-high 24 points — the only player in double figures for Conifer — as the Lobos toppled host Berthoud 51-49 in the consolation draw of the Berthoud Invitational on Dec. 14.
Macaulay hit five 3-pointers for Conifer (2-6). Junior Will Stevenson added eight points.

  • Patience pays off as Lobos top...

It would’ve been easy for the Conifer Lady Lobos to abandon their game plan and try another approach Dec. 14 against visiting Valor Christian. After all, the Lady Eagles had opened up a 10-point cushion early in the second quarter.
But that’s not Conifer’s style. Not this year’s team anyway.

  • Pond withstands injury, shows...

EVERGREEN — Cody Pond had just wrestled and pulled on a T-shirt when he was asked to push it back up. A bag of ice was placed over his chest, where he had torn cartilage just days earlier.
“It hurts, but I’m going to get over it,” the Platte Canyon 145-pounder said.

  • Mahonia can be put into fresh...

It has been a sunny day but considerably colder than it has been. I assume that means the cold front is moving in and temperatures will be more what we normally expect in December.

Hickman leads Conifer to win in double-overtime thriller
    COLORADO SPRINGS
    — Nick Hickman scored 15 points to lead four Conifer players in double figures as the Lobos scored their first win of the season 73-70 in double overtime against Canon City at the Discovery Canyon Shootout on Dec. 8.
Adam Macaulay and Caleb Henderson added 14 points each, while Will Stevenson scored 10 for Conifer.
Conifer jumped out to an early 15-5 lead before Canon City rally to lead 40-38 going into the fourth quarter.

  • Pinfalls come early, often for...

Pinfall after pinfall — all early — only proved the point. Conifer’s home dual with Alameda on Dec. 6 wasn’t exactly wrestling at its best. Far from it. It was, however, a clinic in what not to do when you’re giving up the experience factor.

  • Huskies can’t keep pace with CA

DENVER — Everybody makes a run at some point. Whether it’s the pros, college or high school, it’s well-documented that basketball games are played in spurts. The key is maintaining the momentum after reeling off a string of points.
Unfortunately, Platte Canyon couldn’t do that Dec. 5 at Colorado Academy. The Huskies used a second-quarter burst to get back in the game, before losing to the host Mustangs 67-39.
