  • Illnesses can’t slow Evergreen...

EVERGREEN — It happens at some point in every sport. The breaking point: the point in which the metaphorical wall goes up and athletes have to fight with everything to break through.
High school girls swim teams are quickly reaching that point and with state competition two weeks away swimmers across the state are fighting harder than ever to break through.
Despite being ravaged by illness and exhaustion, the Evergreen Lady Cougars managed to score a 151-66 win against Conifer on Jan. 25 at the Wulf Recreation Center.

  • Evergreen in control from the...

When it comes to rivalry games, such as one like Evergreen and Conifer, it’s tough for one to stay within themselves. Emotions are high, the adrenaline rush is maddening. But Evergreen’s boys basketball team, clearly the better team, had to find a way to do so.
“We were looking forward to it for the whole week. We had to keep our emotions and nerves down. We did a pretty good job of that and ended up getting a good lead,” Evergreen senior Andre Lane said.

  • Lobos’ patient, numbers pay off

Conifer girls basketball coach Mick Gorrell has preached patient to his Lady Lobos. Against rival Evergreen, which held a decisive size advantage in the post, that game plan Jan. 25 at Conifer High School was imperative toward his team’s success.

  • Dry winter brings mule deer to...

Winter is now deeply entrenched in spite of some exceptionally warm days and spring-like temperatures. We still need snow, but selfishly, I am pleased not to have it.

  • Rare redpolls spotted at area...

As I predicted a few weeks ago, this has become a redpoll winter. Over this past weekend, at least four different reports were on the Denver Field Ornithologists Rare Bird Alert.

  • Struggles at the foul line, on...

BAILEY — It wouldn’t take much to decipher why the Platte Canyon Lady Huskies struggled in a 58-45 girls basketball home loss to The Academy on Jan. 16. Defensive rebounding and free-throw shooting, or the lack thereof, tell the story.

  • Huskies’ emotions get best of...

BAILEY — Ask Platte Canyon head coach Dean Carlstrom and he’ll tell you that on any given night his Huskies could win in the 3A Frontier League. He’ll also tell you that they could lose. It’s all a matter of which Platte Canyon team shows up. That point was proven Jan. 15 in the Huskies’ 67-55 home loss to The Academy.

  • Lobos’ Henderson signs to play...

Caleb Henderson had no clue where San Jacinto College was until baseball coaches from the Pasadena, Texas, school contacted him last fall after seeing the Conifer senior play in a tournament in Arizona. But now, he knows where his future lies after high school.
Henderson signed his letter of intent to play baseball for the Ravens on Jan. 17 at Conifer High School.
He chose San Jacinto over Central Arizona and Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz.

  • Lobos struggle with size, youth

The Conifer Lobos never gave themselves a chance. Specifically, disciplinary action against Conifer’s seniors and captains hindered the Lobos in a 72-45 boys basketball home loss to Golden on Jan. 16.
Conifer head coach Rich Gavelda benched the Lobos’ top players for much of the game for violating team rules following a Jan. 11 game at Alameda. It was a one-game punishment, Gavelda said.

  • Lady Huskies overmatched by...

EVERGREEN —  It took a few minutes and, ironically, a 3-pointer from Laura Cortiz Feal to get the ball rolling, but once Clear Creek’s five-out offense found a rhythm there was little stopping the Lady Golddiggers.
Clear Creek, with a sizable height advantage in the paint, went to the motion offense initially to get visiting Platte Canyon to spread out from its 2-3 zone defense. The Lady Huskies did, and Clear Creek took advantage in a 57-35 victory Jan. 11.
