  • PAC finally gets over the hump

GLENDALE — As the seconds winded down May 9 at Infinity Park it was all the PAC Rugby sideline could do to contain its exuberant enthusiasm. After all this had been three years in the making.
A bridesmaid two years running in the Division II high school state championship game, PAC Rugby, with players from Conifer, Platte Canyon and Evergreen high schools, didn’t want to experience that feeling again. This time it didn’t have to.

  • Butler paces Lobos at leagues

ARVADA — With five first-place and five runner-up finishes, Conifer’s boys swimming boasted one of the stronger performances at the Jeffco 4A league meet. Though the Lobos finished fourth in the team rankings at Meyers Pool on May 12, they still shined in the pool.
Jordyn Butler led the way with victories in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly and swam on the second-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

  • Lobos show improvement at 4A...

LAKEWOOD — Brandon Krage wasn’t going to win the race. No, the Conifer distance runner had too much ground to make up to catch Evergreen’s Jackson Sayler. But what Krage did do may have been just as impressive.
Seeded seventh entering the 1,600-meter run May 12 in the 4A Jeffco League championships at Jefferson County Stadium, Krage picked off runner after runner to finish third in 4 minutes, 39.1 seconds.

  • Girls 800 relay team wins, but...

EVERGREEN — For Cami Rayburn, Jessica Boyd, Rosie Cook and Jessica Johnson, winning the 4x800 meter relay on May 10 at the 3A Frontier League championships was a mere formality. What they were really striving for was a personal-best time.
They didn’t get that, but the Platte Canyon runners easily won the event nontheless — one of two victories for Johnson on the day — in a time of 11 minutes, 20.34 seconds.

  • Huskies’ season halted at...

FLORENCE — Platte Canyon, coming off winning a share of the 3A Frontier League baseball title for the first time since 1975, was ousted in the first round of the 3A District 4 tournament by Trinidad 12-2 on May 12.
The Miners jumped out to an early lead with a five-run first inning then put the game away with seven more runs in the fifth. The game was called after five due to the 10-run mercy rule. Platte Canyon scored a run in the third and the fifth.

  • Tie a different result for Lobos...

Settling for a tie can be somewhat unfulfilling, but don’t tell that to the Conifer Lady Lobos.
Leading scorer Emily Walderman punched home a penalty-kick goal — her 18th score of the season — in the 47th minute as Conifer scored a 1-1 tie with rival Evergreen in the second annual Mountain Cup on May 2 at Lobo Field.
For a team that made the postseason for the first time in four years in 2011, this was Conifer’s playoff game in 2012.

  • Lobos end season on high note,...

Drew Williams had three goals and four assists as the Conifer Lobos snapped a five-game losing streak with a 16-6 season-ending win over Denver South on May 1 at Lobo Field.
Michael Iddings added three goals, while Blake Bannon, Cody Mullins and Steven Manning each scored twice. Four other players — Connor Rankin, Jake Evens, Hunter Shively and Ben Prentner — also scored.
Ryan Carpenter made 18 saves for Conifer (5-10). Salem Zarou led Denver South with two goals.

Cox, Green Mountain end Conifer’s season on a flat note
    LAKEWOOD
    — Adam Cox went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs and Wes Boettcher also had three hits as Green Mountain rolled to a 20-0 home win over Conifer on May 2.
Conifer (9-10 overall, 4-6 4A Jeffco League) lost for the fifth time in six games.
Jordan Estrada, Eric Engle and Josh Rogers all had two hits for the Rams.

  • Conifer’s playoff hopes slipping...

It wasn’t a do-or-die game, but for the Conifer Lobos their home finale against Golden on April 28 was about as much of a must-win situation as there is this late in the regular season.
Unfortunately, Conifer had no answers for Golden starter Eli Thornquist as the Lobos were held to just three hits in dropping their fourth straight game 12-1 on senior day at Conifer High School. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The loss dropped Conifer to 8-9 overall, 3-5 in the 4A Jeffco League.

  • Lobos’ backs against the wall

ARVADA — Macee Broer had a hat trick for Wheat Ridge to help the Lady Farmers knock off visiting Conifer 3-0 on April 25 at the North Area Athletic Complex.
Conifer’s loss forces it to win their final three games and get some outside help in order to qualify for the 4A state playoffs for a second consecutive season. Only the top six teams in the 11-team 4A Jeffco League qualify for the 32-team postseason field.
