Elk Creek Fire to gauge support for tax increase

The Elk Creek Fire Protection District plans to post a survey on its website next week to gauge community support for a proposal to increase the district’s property tax rate.

The survey at www.elkcreekfire.org will ask residents if they would support a tax hike of undetermined size on the November ballot.

Work continues on historic lodge

HistoriCorps and Jeffco Open Space have teamed up again this year on a project to restore the historic Baehrden Lodge in Pine Valley Ranch Park.

“We’re restoring history,” said volunteer Douglas Fowler. “I’ve always been a service-oriented person, and this is just another way to serve the community.”

Conifer High has a new principal

Conifer High School’s new principal has 21 years of education experience and is leaving his position at Northridge High School in Greeley to come to CHS.

Jeffco schools announced to parents on Friday that Wesley Paxton will succeed Mike Musick as the school’s principal in the 2013-14 school year. Musick has taken a position at the district level in the new School Innovation and Effectiveness Division.

Political newcomer running for Boggs' school board seat

A political newcomer has announced a bid for the Jeffco school board seat currently held by fiscal conservative Laura Boggs.

Jeff Lamontagne, co-founder of the Second Wind Fund, recently announced he is running for the Board of Education seat in District 2, which covers a sprawling area in the western part of the county.

If you’re tired of that old television or microwave taking up space in the garage, this weekend offers a chance to cheaply and safely dispose of many recyclable items.

The third annual Spring Fling It Recycling Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Conifer High School on Saturday.

“We hope that people turn out and support the recycling efforts of our community,” said Susan Imming of the Conifer Area Council.

Commissioners divided on EDC’s request for more funds

With budget discussions under way for next year, Jeffco's county commissioners are hearing from all quarters about the need for more funding.

One group seeking more taxpayer dollars, the Jefferson County Economic Development Corp., made its pitch again last week. Yet it was the commissioners who ended up doing most of the talking.

Commissioner Don Rosier asked members of the EDC to attend last week's commissioners meeting to continue discussions about funding for the economic-development group's new Forward Jeffco initiative.

Boggs tries to block filming at school board meeting - AUDIO

Jeffco schools Superintendent Cindy Stevenson summoned security at last Thursday’s board meeting when school board member Laura Boggs tried to prevent a district employee from recording video of a speaker.

Broomfield resident Kelly Scott was addressing the board about his desire for schools to get back to Judeo-Christian roots and teachings when Boggs stood and blocked the iPad camera of communications manager Marlene Desmond.

Rayburn outruns the field in 100

EVERGREEN — It’s all about the start. When you’re running only 100 meters, a good start — or a bad one, for that matter — can make all the difference. It certainly did for Platte Canyon’s Cami Rayburn on April 30 at Clear Creek High School.
In the final Frontier League meet prior to this week’s conference championship, Rayburn blistered the field with a run of 13.78 seconds.

Program helps girls gain traction on teen challenges

It’s pretty obvious that an organization called Girls on the Run teaches girls how to run.

But that’s only a small part of what girls in Girls on the Run does.

The girls in third through fifth grade do community service projects, support each other and learn valuable lessons about navigating the challenges of their teen years.
