Tie a different result for Lobos, Cougars

Settling for a tie can be somewhat unfulfilling, but don’t tell that to the Conifer Lady Lobos.
Leading scorer Emily Walderman punched home a penalty-kick goal — her 18th score of the season — in the 47th minute as Conifer scored a 1-1 tie with rival Evergreen in the second annual Mountain Cup on May 2 at Lobo Field.
For a team that made the postseason for the first time in four years in 2011, this was Conifer’s playoff game in 2012.

Elk Creek chief aiming to encourage more fire mitigation

Elk Creek Fire Chief Bill McLaughlin hopes to encourage more neighborhoods and subdivisions to form Firewise Communities to help keep mountain properties fire ready.

Bartlett leaving fire board

Elk Creek Fire Protection District board member Mike Bartlett resigned from the board May 1, saying he was disappointed by the board’s “pro-union” direction, the declining volunteer numbers and possible future tax increases.
“What I ran on was that I was promoting a volunteer fire department supported by a small paid staff,” Bartlett said. “That’s the direction they’re going away from.”
Bartlett was elected in 2008 for a two-year term and again in 2010 for a four-year term.

Butler paces Lobos at leagues

ARVADA — With five first-place and five runner-up finishes, Conifer’s boys swimming boasted one of the stronger performances at the Jeffco 4A league meet. Though the Lobos finished fourth in the team rankings at Meyers Pool on May 12, they still shined in the pool.
Jordyn Butler led the way with victories in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly and swam on the second-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

West Jefferson Elementary School is celebrating the careers of three retiring staff members.

Mock crash shows students real consequences

The students gathered outside Conifer High School on May 2 were calm.

But the scene was horrific. An SUV and a car had apparently smashed into each other at high speeds in the school parking lot. Beer cans and shards of glass littered the pavement.
