    Jeffco Public Schools can’t count on state funding to make up its budget shortfalls, which is why it is asking voters in November to approve a tax increase, a district administrator says.

  • Day camp for kids now available at Beaver Ranch

    Children in the 285 Corridor now have an option to go to summer day camp at Conifer Community Park at Beaver Ranch.

     

    The Evergreen Park and Recreation District opened the Beaver Ranch Day Camp this summer in Conifer as an extension of its Summer Adventure Camp.

  • Feeding hungry children

    The Rotary Club of Conifer is preparing to launch a food program that will provide school children on free and reduced-price lunches with extra nutrition on the weekends.

    The club will buy food for the program, being called Feed the Need, and send it home with children on Fridays. The club will launch the program this fall at Deer Creek Elementary School in Bailey.

  • School projects planned this summer

     Jefferson County Public Schools budgeted $31.5 million for capital projects, including maintaining its facilities, in the 2011-12 school year. The projects are being done over the summer.

    • Conifer High: Finish wastewater pipeline and lift station project, update communication technology, replace front stairs to the entry.

    • West Jefferson Middle: Finish wastewater pipeline and lift stations project, replace fire alarm and security system, update communication technology.

  • Jeffco graduation rate ranks third in country

    Jeffco Public Schools has the third highest graduation rate of the 50 largest school districts in the nation, according to a recent report.

    The report lists the district’s graduation rate at 85.5 percent. Montgomery County, Md., had an 87.6 percent graduation rate, and Fairfax County, Va., a larger school district, also had 85.5 percent. 

    Last year, Jeffco ranked fifth in the nation, according to a news release.

  • Little White School House to become a museum

    The Conifer Historical Society wants to turn the town’s historic Little White School House into a museum and office.
    The society already has talked with Jefferson County Public Schools officials about acquiring the building and hopes that a deal will be hammered out by the end of June, society president Janet Shown said.
