Michael Shawn Kearns, 52, a retired military intelligence officer with no previous experience in elected office, has launched a low-key campaign as an unaffiliated, write-in candidate in the 6th Congressional District, which includes Evergreen.

Other candidates in the running are incumbent Republican Mike Coffman, Libertarian Rob McNealy of Aurora and Democrat John Flerlage of Littleton.

Kearns, 52, described himself as an “anti-terrorism security consultant and political activist” in a news release that announced his campaign in March.

He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1990 due to disability from several injuries, including a broken knee suffered during a Special Operations training exercise in 1984. He moved to Bergen Park in 2003. He is self-employed as a security consultant and private investigator and is studying for a Ph.D. in educational psychology atAndrews University in Michigan.

He views running as an unaffiliated candidate as a way to negate partisan party politics and pave the way for citizen-politicians described in the writings of James Madison.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Kearns claims to have parachuted over all seven continents and participated in a 1997 four-way skydive over the South Pole, in which three of the parachutists died. A report on this expedition can be found on the Internet.

Kearns’ website, www.KEARNSforCongress.com, is still being constructed and is scheduled to go up in mid-July.
