Community Veterans Coalition Rendezvous

A Community Veterans Coalition Rendezvous will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at Conifer Community Park at Beaver Ranch, 11369 South Foxton Road. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Denver organizations are working with the Community Veterans Coalition to provide outreach to Veterans living in the mountain communities of southern Jefferson and Park counties. Spring Fling-It Festival

Mt. Evans Hospice offers summer weekend camp for grieving children

Registration is underway for both the June 22-24 and July 27-29 sessions of Mt. Evans Hospice’s annual Camp Comfort. This unique bereavement camp is a way for children ages 6 to 12 to explore their feelings of grief and share memories of their loved ones. The total cost to attend Camp Comfort, including all workshops, recreation, meals, snacks and overnight accommodations, is $150. Scholarships are available based on financial need. Conifer VFW Ladies Auxiliary group

Two slash collection weekends in the foothills

The summer’s slash collection dates have been set. They will be:

• 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 16 and 17 at Conifer High School, sponsored by the Elk Creek Fire Protection District,

• 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 11 and 12 at 8445 U.S. 285 near Inter-Canyon Fire Station 3, sponsored by Inter-Canyon and Indian Hills fire departments.

Fees are for a small pickup: bed high $5, cab high $8, above cab high $10; for a large pickup: bed high $8, cab high $10, above cab high $12. Single-axle trailers are $10, and double-axle trailers are $15. Dump trucks are $20 cab high and $25 above-cab high.

The Rooney Road collection site, 151 S. Rooney Road in Golden, is open every day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no fees for dumping slash.

Choice enrollment opens for Jeffco Public Schools

Jefferson County families who wish to enroll their children in a school other than their neighborhood school, have the option of participating in Jeffco Public Schools’ choice enrollment process for the 2012-13 school year. Applications during the second-round, which runs through Thursday, Aug. 30, are added to the remaining names on the first-round list on a first-come, first-served basis. Hiwan Homestead Museum is seeking interested community members to become volunteers to assist in teaching school programs. Mt. Evans Hospice offers suicide survivors group

Mt. Evans Hospice has joined with Heartbeat, a national suicide survivors organization, to offer a drop-in support group for friends and family of suicide victims. The group, which is facilitated by Mt. Evans grief professionals and Heartbeat volunteers, provides education and support in a confidential environment. The shelter also accepts used ink cartridges and cell phones. Sheriff’s Office Youth Academy starting in June

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for the 2011 Youth Academy. This free academy is for young people between the ages of 14 and 20, and offers them a peek inside their local law enforcement agency. Students will also participate in hands-on “shooting” at the indoor laser firing range. The academy will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4-8 at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, 200 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden. Discovery Time classes

Pet supplies needed

The Intermountain Humane Society needs the following items to help keep the pets at the shelter safe, warm and happy. It is asking for pet foods that are free from food coloring and dyes, and it needs canned pate-style cat food, dry adult and kitten food, canned and dry adult dog and puppy food, and chew toys such as Kongs, Nylabone and rawhides. The society also needs two-pocket folders, manila folders, photocopy paper, heavy-duty plastic sleeves to label the kennels, a pellet stove wood pellets, bleach, paper towels, powdered laundry soap, dishwashing soap, 15- and 30-gallon trash bags, and outdoor floodlight-type light bulbs. Free car seat safety checks

Free car seat safety checks are offered by Drive Smart Evergreen/Conifer from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second Saturday of each month at the Chuck Ridings State Farm building, 3112 Evergreen Parkway in Evergreen. SRC offers adult day and respite services

Seniors’ Resource Center, a community-based nonprofit organization, can provide funding to help eligible seniors attend non-residential adult day and respite services programs at no or reduced cost. This aid, made possible through state and federal funding with a grant from the Denver Regional Council of Governments, helps provide a positive and safe environment for seniors with daytime activities at the Seniors’ Resource Center’s homelike facility in Evergreen, while enabling their caregivers to handle other responsibilities such as work or errands. Forest Service fuel treatment operations

The U.S. Forest Service has approved limited fuel treatment operations in portions of the Harris Park Fuel Treatment Project on weekends and holidays. Cutting, skidding, and other activities will be allowed in those parts of the treatment units farther than a half-mile from private property. Parent/child classes

The Mountain Resource Center offers early childhood family education classes Monday through Thursday mornings. Each class meets once a week and is designed for families with children ages newborn to 5. Each session includes parent/child education together and breakout sessions for parents to meet with trained facilitators. Kids' Kamp

On the second Sunday of the month, second- through fifth-grade children are invited to stay after 10 a.m. worship for a Kids' Kamp at Deer Park United Methodist Church. Enjoy a prepared lunch, watch videos, and participate in play-acting games and singing. Children will be able to help make food packages for the Interfaith Pantry.
