Conifer’s economy will get a boost when retailer Big R Farm & Ranch opens here sometime in the fall.
Dawn Smith, president of the Conifer Area Chamber of Commerce, said the store will initially bring 32 much-needed jobs to the area.
“We are so excited,” Smith said. “Because they are hiring 32 positions, it’s really exciting (for) the opportunity for people to be employed up here.”
The store will be located in the King Soopers shopping center at 25577 Conifer Road and will be next to Knit Knook.

Adam Carroll, general manager of Big R Farm & Ranch, said the 26,000-square-foot store will open in November.

“We’re excited about the market, and there’s a good need for our kind of store, so we’re coming to town,” Carroll said.

Carroll describes Big R as a 21st-century farm and ranch store. It offers traditional ranch and feed items but also features a selection of work wear, fashion clothing, sporting goods, automotive items, guns, ammunition, and hunting, fishing and cold-weather gear.

“There’s a little bit of everything,” Carroll said. “We’ll have comparable pricing like the big boys but service like the small guys do.”

Carroll said local real estate agents approached him about opening a store in Conifer and after learning more about the area, the retailer decided a store would be a good fit.

“The more we studied (the area), the more we liked it,” Carroll said.

The new store is smaller than other stores in the Big R chain, which has 13 outlets in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. Carroll is confident the store will be a success. Residents can spend their money in Conifer and avoid driving to Denver to get what they need, he said.

Big R is big on community support, and Carroll said once the store is open, it plans on lending a helping hand to schools and local organization.

Carroll said most of the staff would be hired from the Conifer area. Big R is hiring two assistant managers, a bookkeeper, several sales personnel for clothing, agriculture and feed, sporting goods, hardware and tack departments, as well as workers for yard positions and receiving. Once the store is up and fully operating, Big R will employ approximately 25 people full time.
